Phase 6 Super Stereo - Introduzione Al Suono A 3 Dimensioni (1973) 33RPM compact RiP

Format................................................33RPM compact

Total Time.....................................................16'.10''ca.
Label...................................................Vedette Records
Producer...........................................Armando Sciascia
Filetype.....................................WAV 48kHz 16bit PCM

Edizioni Musicali Century Music-Tank

El Coco was the best-known of several projects by cult disco favorites W. Michael Lewis and Laurin Rinder, who produced, arranged, wrote, and played all the instruments on the vast majority of their material.
Their distinctive sound was partly a result of their jazz training, which showed up not only in their arrangements and chord progressions, but in the overall musicality and sonic imagination. Rinder had been a longtime session and touring drummer for rock and soul artists, and played on sessions at Motown and Muscle Shoals.
He met keyboardist Lewis in Los Angeles during the late '60s at an audition for the Standells; the two went on to play in a rock band called Joshua, and in 1973 were hired by the AVI label to play on some extended RB remixes geared for danceclub play.
Thus hooked into the emerging disco sound, Rinder and Lewis began producing and recording their own tracks in 1975, issuing the LP Caravan under the fictitious group name El Coco (a drug reference).
Mondo Disco followed in 1976, as did Let's Get It Together, the point where they really hit their stride.
The title cut was co-written by singer Merria Ross and was a substantial club hit, breaking El Coco on the disco scene.
The title tracks on 1977's Cocomotion and 1978's Dancing Paradise were also successful, with the former (again co-written by Ross) ranking as El Coco's best-remembered outing. By this time, Rinder and Lewis were producing TV theme music as well, and began issuing side projects on the Butterfly label as well; these alternate guises included Tuxedo Junction, Saint Tropez, le Pamplemousse, Rinder Lewis, and the Rinlew Allstars. Following 1979's Dance Man, the duo retired the El Coco name to concentrate on their other projects; in the wake of the anti-disco backlash, they remained in television for a time during the early '80s before retiring from music.

JOHNNiE TAYLOR:

Johnnie Taylor (May 5, 1934, 1937 or 1938? – May 31, 2000) was an American vocalist in a wide variety of genres, from gospel, blues and soul to pop, doo-wop and disco.

EARLY YEARS:

Johnnie Harrison Taylor was born in Crawfordsville, Arkansas. As an adult, he had one release, "Somewhere to Lay My Head", on Chicago's Chance Records label in the 1950s, as part of the gospel group Highway QCs, which had been founded by a young Sam Cooke. His singing was strikingly close to that of Sam Cooke, and he was hired to take Cooke's place in Cooke's gospel group, the Soul Stirrers, in 1957.

A few years later, after Cooke had established his independent SAR Records, Taylor signed on and recorded "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day" in 1962. However, SAR Records quickly became defunct after Cooke's death in 1964.

In 1966, Taylor moved to Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was dubbed "The Philosopher of Soul". Whilst there he recorded with the label's house band, Booker T. & the MGs. His hits included "I Had a Dream", "I've Got to Love Somebody's Baby" (both written by the team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter) and most notably "Who's Making Love", which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on the R&B chart in 1968. "Who's Making Love" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.

During his tenure at Stax, he became an R&B star, with over a dozen chart successes, such as "Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone", which reached No. 23 on the Hot 100 chart, "Cheaper to Keep Her" (Mack Rice) and record producer Don Davis's penned "I Believe in You (You Believe in Me)", which reached No. 11 on the Hot 100 chart. "I Believe in You (You Believe in Me)" also sold in excess of one million units, and was awarded gold disc status by the R.I.A.A. in October 1973. Taylor, along with Isaac Hayes and The Staple Singers was one of the label's flagship artists. He appeared in the documentary film, Wattstax, which was released in 1973.

Hamilton Bohannon (born Hamilton Frederick Bohannon, March 7, 1942, Newnan, Georgia) is an American percussionist, band leader and record producer, who was one of the leading figures in 1970s disco music.

CAREER:

After graduating from Clark College, Atlanta and playing in local bands, he was hired by Stevie Wonder to be the drummer in his touring band. He moved to Detroit in 1965 and was employed by Motown as band leader and arranger for many of the label’s top acts. When Motown moved from Detroit in 1972, he stayed behind to form his own band. His band featured members of the Detroit band The Fabulous Counts.

He signed with Dakar/Brunswick Records and in early 1973 released the album Stop And Go. This was followed by five more albums for the label over the next two years, on which he perfected his formula of heavy, thudding bass accents and aggressive rhythms. Although several of his tracks were club hits, he had limited chart success – however, in 1975 "Disco Stomp" made the Top Ten in the UK, and "Foot Stompin’ Music" later that year scraped into the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Top 40.

In 1976, Bohannon signed to Mercury Records and two years later had his biggest success with "Let’s Start The Dance." It made the R&B Top Ten and featured the singer Carolyn Crawford, whose subsequent albums Bohannon went on to produce.

Although he continued to release records through the 1980s using new vocalists Liz Lands and Altrinna Grayson, he met with diminishing success. Nevertheless, more recently his music has been widely sampled.

His name was mentioned in the Tom Tom Club song "Genius of Love."

Bohannon is a devout Christian and dedicated his album "Dance Your Ass Off" to "God and His Son, Jesus Christ". The album also included a disclaimer that "The word 'ass' is not used here in the sense of profanity."

CARL DOUGLAS:

Carl Douglas (born 10 May 1942) is a Jamaican-born singer, most famous for his song "Kung Fu Fighting", which hit number one on both the UK Singles Chart and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. The R.I.A.A. awarded gold disc status on 27 November, and it won a Grammy Award for Best Selling Single in 1974. The fame of this homage to martial arts films has overshadowed the rest of the singer's career, resulting in his appearance on cover versions of the song. Douglas did release two other singles ("Blue Eyed Soul" and "Dance The Kung Fu", which was sampled by DJ Premier in his 2007 remix of Nike's 25th Air Force One anniversary single "Classic (Better Than I've Ever Been)", featuring Kanye West, Nas, KRS-One and Rakim. But he has gone down in recording history as an example of a one hit wonder.

He was at one time managed by Eric Woolfson, later the primary songwriter behind The Alan Parsons Project.

In 1998, a re-recording of his most famous song, billed as Bus Stop featuring Carl Douglas, reached number 8 in the UK Singles Chart.

He now resides in Hamburg, Germany where he runs SMV (Schacht Musik Verlage), a publishing company that coordinates films, documentaries, and advertisements.

KUNG FU FiGHTiNG:

"Kung Fu Fighting" is a song written and performed by Carl Douglas and Vivian Hawke, and produced by Biddu. It was released as a single in 1974, at the cusp of a chopsocky film craze, and quickly rose to the top of British and American charts. "Kung Fu Fighting" was also number one on the soul singles chart for one week. The song also is famous for its use of the quintessential Oriental Riff, a short musical phrase that is used to signify Chinese culture.

It originally was meant to be a B-side to I Want to Give You My Everything (written by Brooklyn songwriter Larry Weiss, Sung by Carl Douglas), and was recorded in the last ten minutes of his studio time.

Douglas states that his inspiration to write the song was affected by three factors: he had seen a kung fu movie, later visited a jazz concert by Oscar Peterson, and was suffering from side-effects of pain killers (Douglas had injured his foot playing football). Another account gives his inspiration simply as seeing two kids in London doing kung fu moves.

Kung Fu Fighting was rated #100 in VH1's 100 Greatest one-hit wonders, and number 1 in the UK Channel 4's Top 10 One Hit Wonders list in 2000, the same channel's 50 Greatest One Hit Wonders poll in 2006 and Bring Back ... the one-hit Wonders, for which Carl Douglas performed the song in a live concert.

GENESiS:

Upon seeing his friend was suffering a bad experience whilst high on mescaline, Santana composed a song titled "The Mushroom Lady's Coming to Town". This precursor contained the first lick to the song "Europa". It was put away and not touched for some time.

When Santana was touring with Earth, Wind & Fire in Manchester, England, he played this song again, this time with Tom Coster who helped him with some of the chords and thus Europa was born. It was renamed to "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)".

COVERS:

A famous rendition was by saxophonist Gato Barbieri off his 1976 from album Caliente!.
In 2006, saxophonist Jimmy Sommers covered the song for his Standards album "Time Stands Still."
Contemporary jazz guitarist Nils released a rendition from his 2009 album Up Close & Personal.

Side A - Enrico Simonetti - Gamma
Side B - Enrico Simonetti - Drug's Theme

Chic - Good Times (1979) 45RPM RiP

SiNGLE by Chic

Total Time........................9' 50''ca.
Producer...........................Bernard Edwards & Nile Rodgers
Label................................Atlantic
Filetype............................Wav @ 48kHz

TRACKLiST:

Side A - Chic - Good Times
Side B - Chic - A Warm Summer Night

HiSTORY:

The lyrics are largely based on Milton Ager's "Happy Days Are Here Again."
It also contains lines based on lyrics featured in "About a Quarter to Nine" made famous by Al Jolson.
Nile Rodgers has stated that these depression-era lyrics were used as a hidden way to comment
on the then-current economic depression in the United States.

Songs that sample "Good Times"

In late 1979, Debbie Harry suggested that Nile Rodgers join her and Chris Stein at a Hip hop event in a communal space taken over by young kids and teenagers with boom box stereos, who would play various pieces of music to which performers would break dance. The main piece of music they would use was the break section of "Good Times." A few weeks later, Blondie, The Clash and Chic were playing a gig in New York at Bonds nightclub. When Chic started playing "Good Times," rapper Fab Five Freddy and members of the Sugarhill Gang jumped up on stage and started freestyling with the band; Rodgers allowed them to "do their improvisation thing like poets, much like I would playing guitar with Prince."

A few weeks later Rodgers was on the dance floor of New York club LaViticus and suddenly heard the DJ play a song which opened with Edwards bass line from "Good Times". Rogers approached the DJ who said he was playing a record he had just bought that day in Harlem. The song turned out to be an early version of "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang, which Rogers noted also included a scratched version of the song's string section. Rogers and Edwards threatened The Sugarhill Gang with legal action, which resulted in them being credited as co-writers on "Rappers Delight".

In the USA "Rapper's Delight" did not achieve as much chart success as "Good Times" (peaking at #36 on the U.S. pop chart and #4 on the American R&B charts, compared to Chic's #1 peak on both charts) but it helped to popularize the bassline and the song, and it became one of the most sampled tracks (and hence one of the most distinctive basslines) in the history of recorded music. Having agreed on a commercial structure for the use of their song in "Rappers Delight", Edwards and Rodgers agreed to later uses in other songs, subject to their strict criteria.

In recent concerts, Nile Rodgers usually segues into his rendition of "Rapper's Delight" when Chic performs this song.

While, with Gang Starr, Da Lench Mobb and Full Force sampling their music, they have also more recently made a significant impact on the hip-hop generation.

In particular, their 1975 song "Rock Creek Park" from the City Life album has been sampled numerous times by groups such as De La Soul, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, NWA, Massive Attack, Ice Cube, Heavy D, Nas and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five.

Side B - Gwen McCrae - Easy Rock

Ex-wife of George McCrae, Gwen McCrae was born as Gwen Mosley in Pensacola, Florida, U.S.A., in late 1943.

She sang, as many Black Children did at the time, in the Church. Gwen attended a Pentecostal Church.

Gwen first met George in Pensacola and the pair married in 1964, after a relationship that was only a week old!

George was in the Navy at the time and, after leaving the services, he reformed his old group The Jiving Jets, and offered Gwen a role within the group.

They duo soon left the group to perform as a husband and wife team, with Gwen later relocating to West Palm Beach, Florida, up until 1975.

Today she lives in Pensacola.

Along with George, Gwen was part of the Miami based T.K. Records operation during the Seventies.

The duo were, originally discovered by the singer Betty Wright back in 1967.

Betty aided the duo, by helping them get a deal with the Henry Stone owned Alston imprint.

In 1969, they released their debut single 'Three Hearts In A Tangle'.

This was followed up by 'Like Yesterday Our Love Is Gone'.

The duo had now collaborated with Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke, a team that was later to blossom under the T.K. umbrella.

A third single entitled 'No One Left To Come Home' was released and the pair began session work alongside Betty Wright.

Gwen first found solo success in 1970, remake of the old Bobby Bland gospel-blues song, 'Lead Me On' (R & B number 32).

The record was recorded for TK Records.

Contrary to reports, George never retired or managed Gwen during this period.

Alston leased her contract to Columbia where she recorded several more singles over the next few years.

Columbia then declined to renew Gwen's contract in 1973, and she was signed to a different Henry Stone label, the T.K. subsidiary, Cat.

At that imprint, she followed with a remake of the Ed Townsend oldie, 'For Your Love' (R & B number 17).

Gwen had a minor 1974 hit with the song 'It's Worth the Hurt', however, the song's success was overshadowed by George's recording, namely, the enormous pop hit 'Rock Your Baby'.
